Vaikuttamisen viehätys // Charm of influence

In English below

Tällainen pelko on kuitenkin turhaa.

For students who act in different associations, Autumn is the time of recruiting new members, grouping the new students and organizing events. In the Autumn, there will be also an election of representatives in nearly every student union.

Without underestimating the local branches’ own education policy, often the most important work of influencing will go through the student union and its representatives. Local branches focus mainly to their own area of study but student unions work for collective interest of all students. These things must not be against each other but rather mutually supportive. The seat in representatives also facilitates the local branch’s own work increasing contacts with other students and school staff. Among other things, these are the reasons why it’s important that there are also as much as possible BBA student candidates in the election of representative council. And therefore, BBA students are also largely represented in the representatives.

Many people think about losing in the election. “What if I only get one vote?” Even I also thought that way as my first year of study and refused to go for a candidate. However, such fear is futile. Those who are not interested in the elections can hardly ever know about the votes and those who are interested will appreciate already the candidacy. After that refusal, I’ve taken part of nearly everything possible and I do not regret it.

The national unions of BBA students and engineer students have been running a campaign “I want to decide” from year 2014 onwards. The campaign aims to encourage BBA and engineer students to work for the council elections. The Unions can’t do this work in student unions but with the campaign we want to provide nationwide support, information and materials for the candidates. The campaign has been growing year after year and the results have been visible increasing the number of BBA and engineer students in representatives. Over the years also other areas of study have been included in the campaign.

The representative council also opens opportunities to apply for many kinds of mandates and workgroups. Most of these can be applied even if you’re not in the representatives but it is certainly seen as a sign of interest in influencing if you are even a candidate in election. Among other things I have worked as a student member of the board of Lapland UAS, vice-chairperson of the committee of study grants and several different development workgroups. In all of these I have learned a lot and been able to influence in different ways and in different environments on the status and interests of the student’s affairs.

It is said that power is fascinating but among the students I would speak about the charm of influence. When the top is over, it’s hard to stop in the middle. Identify your own realities and strengths and apply the posts that are the most interesting for you. Do not doubt that you couldn’t make it!
